What kind of car is going to get you noticed? Is it going to be an SUV? Nope. Is it going to be that expensive sports car you bought at an auction online? Perhaps. Is it going to be you driving a Honda Accord to work and to pick up the kids when everyone else is driving three-row SUVs and pickup trucks? Yep. What used to be one of the most mundane cars in the automotive world, due to being just another sedan, has now become something of a statement. It is a car that says that you don’t buy into the SUV craze. It is one that says that you still recognize and appreciate the value of the car, something that many people seem to forget.

There is really no reason why sedans are losing out to SUVs; they’re more comfortable, easier to drive, and don’t cost you an arm-and-a-leg at the pump. Yet, SUV sales are up while sedan sales are down. It may be the appeal of higher ride height, perceived roominess, and on-again-off-again 4WD. What may surprise you is the Honda Accord actually has more room than most small SUVs. Think about that for a minute.

Most SUVs are indeed great vehicles that serve a purpose for whoever is buying them. The thing we’re trying to hit home is that, despite what manufacturers may have you believe, there are still drivers who prefer sedans over SUVs, and the Honda Accord may just be the greatest sedan of them all. Let’s take a deeper look at what we think are the four benefits of owning a Honda Accord. And when you’re ready to begin your search for online Honda Accord sales, check out our great selection at Online.cars.

You’re Driving a Vehicle With a Rich Automotive History

So the legend of the Honda Accord is not the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters, but you should know that the vehicle is part of a nearly 50-year history of continuous excellence. The Accord began life in 1976 as an “upscale” version of the Honda Civic. The 1976 Accord was a two-door hatchback more in the style of a Ford Pinto or AMC Pacer than the sleek-looking sedan we know today. The original Accord was pretty small and had next to no horsepower, but it could get the job done and get you to where you needed to go, and it was fuel efficient.

The late 1970s have similarities to our present problems with foreign powers, inflation, and record fuel prices. The enormous American land yachts were no longer acceptable driving material owing simply to the fact that they were too expensive to run. Small cars, as a result, became more popular. Japanese cars, in particular, were a joke on the American market up to this point. It may seem surprising now, but before the late 1970s, Japanese cars were considered poorly built and unreliable. The Accord began to make headway when its second generation rolled around in the 1980s. It’s worth noting that the Honda Accord was the first Japanese car built in America. Honda had built a brand new factory in Marysville, Ohio, which started pumping out Accords specifically built for the American market.

The Accord continued to go through several different iterations during the coming decades. At one point, it was sold as a trifecta: a sedan, coupe, and wagon. It became a symbol of suburban America, becoming increasingly refined with each passing generation. It also earned a reputation as one of the best, most reliable cars on the market. We know Toyota makes a big stink about how many of their cars sold between certain dates are still on the road. Take a look the next time you’re out and see how many different generations of Honda Accord are still being driven. The results may surprise you.

It Has an Array of Safety and Driver Assistance Features

The next benefit you can reap from a Honda Accord is that you are driving an incredibly safe vehicle. There is a great myth that your car needs to be big and heavy in order to be safe. That may have been true in the past, but it certainly isn’t true now. All cars are held to rigorous safety standards to meet the demands of the market. People want to know that they are stepping into a vehicle with not only the standard safety equipment, like airbags, seatbelts, and rear child safety locks, but with an entire suite of onboard safety technology that will work non-stop, analyzing road conditions and adjusting as such. You cannot buy a car anymore without these modern features.

The Honda Accord has them in abundance. The Honda Sensing suite comes available across all trim levels, with obvious upgrades the higher up in trim you go. However, the standard suite of Honda Sensing technology includes a collision mitigation braking system to help avoid collisions and sense pedestrians you might otherwise not see. The lane keeping assist system is designed to help you stay in your lane on the highway and alerts you when you begin to drift. The adaptive cruise control with a low-speed follow uses radar and sensors to monitor the speed of the vehicle in front of you and adjust your speed to maintain a safe distance between yourself and the person in front of you. It’s not quite autopilot mode, but it’s pretty close.

It’s Easy and Fun to Drive

One of the things about a sedan is that it is really easy to drive, and while you’d be hard-pressed to find a car that isn’t easy to drive these days, the Honda Accord is one of the easier vehicles. This is not just because it has an automatic transmission and an array of safety features; the Honda Accord, being a sedan, has a lower center of gravity than an SUV. This allows for a better road feel, meaning that you are, in a sense, more attuned to the environment in which you are driving, but it doesn’t mean you will feel every crack and bump in the asphalt.

On the contrary, the suspension system on the Honda Accord is tuned to the drive modes, of which there are three: the Econ, Sport, and EV. The EV is exclusive to the hybrid models, allowing you to operate on battery power alone for a certain amount of time. Econ mode is designed to help increase your fuel efficiency, but it is the Sport mode that is going to give you the best driving experience. This mode increases engine output and tightens the suspension to give you that sticking-to-the-road feeling of control. It’s the difference between feeling the corners and coasting through the corners, something you just cannot get in an SUV. There is no type of car that is going to get you a better feeling on the road than a properly tuned sedan, except maybe an expensive sports car, but we’re not here to talk about that.

More Bang for Your Buck

Lastly, the chief benefit of buying a Honda Accord is that you get a lot in return for very little investment. For a starting MSRP of $26,520, you get a vehicle with the safety suite we mentioned earlier, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a rearview camera, dual-zone climate control, push-button start, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display. On top of that, it gets an impressive EPA-estimated fuel economy of 30 MPG in the city and 38 MPG on the highway. That’s an excellent price point for a car this packed with features. Of course, as you go higher up in trim levels, you will have more options available, but even the highest Touring trim is available for $38,450. So no matter which trim level you buy, you’re automatically saving money, which is really the whole point of an economy car.

More Than Your Typical Midsize Sedan

The Honda Accord has had a long history of popularity in this country, and it’s easy to see why. Going through the benefits we listed is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the goodness that exists with the Honda Accord. There’s a reason it still exists while other manufacturers are limiting or cutting their sedan line. While the competition field is getting smaller, the Accord will just continue doing what it always does; being a standout vehicle that’s reliable, packed with innovative tech, and all at an affordable price.
