Looking for a little more rebellion in your life? Then, it's time to check out a Jeep Wrangler for sale. Many call it the "Jeepest" of Jeep vehicles. Everything about it emanates adventure and freedom. A Wrangler driver is young at heart and always ready for the next exciting journey. While the Wrangler, Jeep's off-road SUV, is technically an off-road vehicle, we think it's great for anyone who wants to break free from the mold — even if you can't actually break free from paved roads. As part of the Jeep lineup since 1986, the Wrangler has many model generations under its belt now.
If you want to check out a huge inventory of used Wranglers, all from the same laptop where you're planning your next great adventure, visit Online.Cars. We have Jeep Wranglers for sale from tons of dealerships across the country. You can compare offers, check out different models and trims, and even apply for financing, all from the comfort of your home. With so many used Wranglers on our website, you have the power to pick the perfect one for your driving habits.
The Wrangler might have officially become its own model in 1986, but it has roots that reach back much farther in history. In fact, it's related to the original Willys — a Jeep-type vehicle used in World War II. Back then, American car company Willys-Overland Motors had what they called the Willys Jeep. They even trademarked the name "Jeep." After the War, regular drivers didn't have much use for the heavy-duty machinery that was the original Jeep Willys, so the company made a more civilian-friendly model. It was called the "Civilian Jeep" – eventually nicknamed the "CJ."
The CJs were more light-duty and consumer-friendly than the Willys. Still, if you find images of these, you'll see what would become iconic Wrangler-style features peeking through, like the slatted grille we all know and the open-body design. Eventually, Kaiser bought Jeep and then, later, American Motors Company (AMC). Towards the mid-1980s, AMC decided to eliminate the CJs entirely, replacing them with an even more lightweight vehicle called the Wrangler YJ. The first Wrangler YJ had the classic Jeep body shape and some parts from the Cherokee at the time. It sat on (appropriately) Goodyear Wrangler tires.
The original Wrangler's engines were small and were paired with a humble three-speed transmission. Over the years, engines got larger, and more gears were added. In 1991, we got the Wrangler Renegade trim, a somewhat oddball model that didn't last long (but later became its own vehicle). Throughout the 1990s, the Wrangler kept getting better. It received anti-lock brakes, more ground clearance, and the classic round headlights anyone can recognize from a mile away.
The year 2003 was a really exciting one for the Wrangler because we got the Rubicon trim — an even more off-road-ready model. It came with standard rear and front differentials, an awesome low-range gear ratio, and beefy 31-inch all-terrain tires. Things have only gotten better since then, and today, the Wrangler is a beautifully beastly off-road SUV.

The Wrangler's improvements have only continued. The Wrangler remains an incredible off-road SUV with 4X4 capabilities, rugged styling, and incredible power. However, Jeep outdid itself again in 2021 with the Rubicon 392. It took the original Rubicon to new heights, literally, with even more ground clearance. The Rubicon 392 also got a super powerful engine and was known for being not just rugged but fast — and it still is.
Also out for the first time in 2021 was the Wrangler 4xe. It combined all of the amazing capabilities we love of the Wrangler with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. That meant off-roaders could explore beautiful green spaces without polluting the air. Today, the various Wrangler trims are available with three tops: a hard, soft, and Sky Top One-Touch. The hard top involves panels attached via latches that you'll need to remove (or replace) before taking off for the day because they won't fit in the cargo area. The soft top gives you a bit more versatility. It's a zip-on, and because it packs down compactly, you can choose to pull over and take it off or put it back on while you're traveling. It can go in the cargo area.
Finally, the Sky Top One-Touch gives you the best of both worlds. You can choose to put it up or down while you're driving, literally. No need to pull over and fuss with zippers or latches. It's an electric-powered roof that expands and contracts over the frame with the push of a button. The Wrangler comes with removable doors so that you can get a powerful cross breeze through your vehicle. To get the true Wrangler experience, we recommend taking the doors off. It's one of the reasons people who crave freedom want the Wrangler. Whether you plan to explore great wilderness destinations or want an everyday vehicle that will add more fun to your commute, the Wrangler is calling you.
